Criminal History Records Check for the Renewal of an Existing License/Certification

House Bill 1318
Senate Bill 769
were passed requiring criminal history records checks of all Registered Nurse (RN), Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), and Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) renewal applicants. Criminal History Record Checks (CHRC) for selected renewal applicants will begin this year.
The Board will be implementing the CHRC for renewals, one month per year for the next 12 years.
All CNAs and Nurses expiring on 11/28/2016, 12/28/2016 and 1/28/2017 must complete a CHRC in order to renew.
You will be receiving or will have received this information in the mail. It is important that you use the information provided to you to ensure the speedy processing of your renewal. You can submit a COPY of your receipt by:

Any RN, LPN, or CNA listed as NON-RENEWED for more than one year after the last expiration must obtain a CHRC in order to renew

Access to Records
Only designated Board staff will have access to the background check records and the results are confidential.
No Criminal History Records Check is required for nurses practicing in Maryland on their compact licenses. This is a requirement for Maryland Licensed Nurses. All compact states will be moving to requiring background check if the checks are not currently required.

NOTICE TO NOVEMBER 2016, DECEMBER 2016 AND JANUARY 2017 CNA / NURSE RENEWALS:
In processing your application for renewal, a receipt for a current Criminal History Record Check (CHRC) is REQUIRED to complete your renewal. Please send a COPY your receipt of a current CHRC (fingerprints) taken after September 1, 2016 to Renewals Department, to the fax number 410-358-3530 or by U.S. Mail to 4140 Patterson Ave, Baltimore, MD 21215-2254 or e-mailing
